De piel de sapo meloen dankt zijn naam aan het uiterlijk. De schil is donkergroen, licht bobbelig en met wat vlekken. De schil doet wat denken aan de huid van een pad. Piel=huid en sapo=pad. De piel de sapo heeft wit vruchtvlees en is heerlijk zoet van smaak.
